This is how I started off my other three pregnancies:
“I am going to have the HEALTHIEST pregnancy EVER! I’m going to eat salads and walk daily and..”
…insert a whole box of mac+cheese into my mouth.
For Wilder (my first) I lived on ramen noodles, cheese pizza, cheesy noodles, pickles, chips+salsa.
For Waverley, I started out a bit healthier until I only wanted bland foods and on came the bread, bread, bread, noodles, cheese and all things white+yellow.
For Tennyson, a bit better -I was eating lots of fruit and veggies and a crap ton of protein, until I threw in the towel and ate whatever I wanted (insert CAKE.)
Now? Bye bye processed foods. Fairwell caffeine. No more meat+diary+eggs. No more processed oils or sugars. I know, doesn’t this sound DREADFUL?! But I’ve discovered it’s NOT! It feels like a secret NO ONE is talking about! How we can take care of our bodies for optimal health -not just for ourselves, but for our children.
Getting my morning greens (pregnant or not) makes a huge difference in my energy level. Which I why I love my scary green breakfast smoothies. The blueberries mixed with the rich green spinach gives this a teal color, hence “Teal-icious.”
(Note: I try to use as much organic produce as possible. Bananas are particularly easy to go organic with since they’re so stinkin’ cheap.)
-1 1/2 to 2 frozen bananas (we keep a tupperware full of them -awesome to have on hand)
-1 c frozen blueberries
-2 big handfuls of spinach
-1-2 tbsp flaxseed (we had ground flaxseed on hand, so that’s what I used) High in Omega-3 fatty acids and wonderful for overall health and cell developement
-several dashes of ginger or several slices if you have a fresh root (yummy and zippy!)
-Almond or soy milk (add as much as you need for desired consistency.)
Blend and enjoy! Tennyson (18 months) LOVES stealing my morning smoothies -and I’m happy to share. Start them little on the green drinks and they’ll love ’em!
We opted for an Oster VERSA and are loving it. It’s less than half the price of a VitaMix -those are awesome, believe me- and it’s been serving us well with our homemade banana ice cream (yep, it’s dairy free, sugar free, vegan and fabulous!) and all our smoothies.
